Despite territorial disputes, the Philippines’ Boracay Island has ranked amongst the top 20 most popular destinations for Chinese travellers, according to new research.
TripAdvisor has released the top 20 destinations for mainland Chinese holiday-makers, based upon July and August 2013 figures from daodao.com, Inquirer Business reported.
Boracay Island was ranked 16th on the list outperforming cities such as Kyoto, Kota Kinabalu, Hanoi and Kuala Lumpur and registering a 360 percent increase in online inquiries.
The above-mentioned destinations also experienced the highest year-on-year travel growth.
Hong Kong was the most popular destination among Chinese travellers, followed by Phuket, Thailand and Taiwan.
“This new generation of Chinese outbound travellers is making their own decisions about where to go, where to stay and what to do by doing their own research online, going beyond the old stereotype of big buses of group tourists,” TripAdvisor China managing director Lily Cheng said.
“These travellers are savvy, sophisticated and do make an effort to understand and respect the local culture by doing a lot of online research before their trip.”
