Princess Cruises to benefit Malaysian economy

Princess Cruises has announced its Sapphire Princess cruise ship will have a positive impact on the Malaysian economy, expecting to bring in 40,000 passengers in its first season.

Sailing from Singapore to Southeast Asia, the Sapphire Princess is expected to bring in approximately US$50 million during its four month season, from November 2014 to February 2015, the Borneo Post reported.

““The total economic impact to Malaysia that Princess Cruises’ new season of cruise trips is expected to bring is considerable, based on passenger and crew spending in each port, port and other local costs as well as travel agent commissions and marketing costs,” Princess Cruises director for Southeast Asia Farriek Tawfik said.

With the cruise tourism market growing at an average rate of 14 percent per year over the past 10 years, Malaysia’s cruise industry is also set to experience a boom with more than half a million passengers expected this year.
