The Royal Caribbean cruise ship, Explorer of the Sea, has returned to its US home port of New Jersey, after nearly 700 passengers fell ill after a suspected norovirus outbreak.
Although lab results are not expected until next week, health authorities suspect norovirus, believing it to be one of the biggest norovirus outbreaks on a cruise ship in the last 20 years.
Upon disembarking, passengers spoke to media waiting at the dock, of their nightmare at sea, with hundreds of people throwing up into buckets and bags.
The norovirus, which is highly contagious, is easily spread from an infected person as well as contaminated water, food and surfaces, causing the victim to suffer from stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea for days.
Explorer of the Sea will be closed during a thorough sanitisation process and no one will be allowed on board for a further 24 hours, before it is due to depart on its next cruise.
