Intercontinental Kuala Lumpur provides flood relief to the victims in east coast, Malaysia

Keeping to its culture, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur a part of InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG®) was recently seen living the IHG Winning Ways through their corporate responsibility efforts in providing disaster relief to the devastating flooding in East Coast states that has been recorded the worst in Malaysia for more than 30 years.

Backed by IHG Shelter in a Storm – a disaster relief programme by IHG, the IHG Shelter Fund was activated to support colleagues and the victims that are affected by the flood. USD $10,000 was allocated and channeled to MERCY Malaysia, a non-profit organisation that has been closely monitoring and responding to the Eastern Coast of Peninsular Malaysia. The funds will be used to provide hygiene kits, food items and to deploy medical support and to support local emergency response services in affected areas. Additional funds were activated to bring aid to our impacted colleagues, a total of 17 colleagues received essential goods and monetary support; 11 colleagues from InterContinental Kuala Lumpur, 4 colleagues from Holiday Inn Kuala Lumpur Glenmarie and 2 colleagues from Holiday Inn Resort Penang.

A week-long charity drive fronted by the hotel’s Human Resources department saw the hotel chefs contributed their skills by cooking up favourites such as nasi lemak, fried noodles, pancakes, cupcakes and even bubur kacang hijau which was sold during breakfast and lunch at the colleagues’ cafeteria. Essential goods and monetary donations were collected and used to purchase medical supplies and food items such as cookies, rice, oil and sugar to name a few for the flood victims. In collaboration with Land Rover Owners Club of Malaysia, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur sent the essential packs to the flood victims in Temerloh, Pahang through the four-wheel drive convoy.

“It is nothing short of heartbreaking and our thoughts go out to all who were impacted by the floods,” comments Hafidh Al Busaidy, InterContinental Kuala Lumpur General Manager. “I am extremely proud of all the colleagues that came together during this time of need to support the local community. The IHG Shelter Fund – a key part of our IHG Shelter in a Storm Programme has enables us to provide this immediate vital assistance required in times of disaster. Both generous efforts have helped make a difference in our communities,” he continues.
