Flight Review of MH122 Sydney (SYD) to Kuala Lumpur (KUL) 18 Nov 09

A mid-week flight always seems emptier and less of a hassle, and this time I was flying Malaysia Airlines MH122 from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur in Economy with seat 54C in a Boeing 747-400.

Check-in and luggage allowance:
Check in was a breeze with the attendant quickly processing the very short line, total wait time was around five minutes.  Luggage allowance with Malaysia Airlines in Economy is 20 kilos.

Lounge access:
Malaysia Airlines operates a Golden Lounge at Sydney Airport.  The site includes all the key features such as showers, wireless internet, snacks and beverages. Little extra touches include a noodles bar with a menu which varies every so often, as well as bathrooms stocked with L’Occitane goodies.
Seat/Cabin conditions: (including pitch/width, seat configuration, comfort, cabin conditions/décor)
Relatively good pitch of 34" and seat width 17", with the cabin laid out in 3-4-3 exception being the last three rows of 2-4-2.  Cabin could do with a refresh as it’s beginning to look a little tired, still using the multi-coloured fabrics.

Customer service:
From the outset, cabin crew were very helpful. I spotted a few of them volunteering to help with passengers’ cabin luggage – which doesn’t happen so much anymore with OH&S issues.  Neighbouring passengers’ requests for extra beverages and the like were fulfilled promptly.

Meal and snack service:
Snacks consisted of peanuts and a beverage, while the main was a choice between lamb or chicken. I elected for the chicken and potatoes.  While the potatoes appeared to have been reduced to starch, the chicken was quite tender and still piping hot.  The main meal was topped off with an ice-cream option, which on this sector turned out to be vanilla and raspberry Weiss Bars.

Lastly a few hours before touching down in Malaysia a final light meal was served, this time consisting of a pesto chicken roll as well as a muesli bar.

Interestingly, menu options are presented through the seat-back screens rather than in individualized brochures. I suppose it’s more environmentally friendly that way…

MH’s entertainment Select can be found in each seatbacks and is displayed in 6" individual screens.  While not the most exhaustive of selections, there’s usually a good mix of new and old options. Featured films this month included G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra, Up, Julie & Julia, as well as the new to cinemas The Time Traveler’s Wife.

On-time performance:
MH122 departed pretty much on time.  Scheduled to depart at 3:40pm, the aircraft pushed back from the gate at 3:48pm.  Arriving into Kuala Lumpur at 9:55pm was a great achievement despite also including a ten minute holding pattern.

On a side note, I’ve discovered something odd about Malaysia Airlines flights, for some reason when the PA comes on the over-ride the sound shifts to maximum volume.  Leaving those with  headphones on being blasted with captain’s messages, so as a warning, don’t fall asleep with your headphones on! You have been warned.

Flight frequency:
MH122 flies from Sydney to Kuala Lumpur daily
