Dusit Thani Dubai, the flagship property in the Middle East region for Dusit International, has achieved Green Globe Bronze Benchmarked 2010 status, making it the first Dusit property to receive this prestigious award.
The Green Globe Benchmarked certification is recognition for Dusit Thani Dubai’s efforts to operate responsibly and establish procedures that will ensure a sustainable future. Examples of the hotel’s initiatives that won it the Green Globe Benchmarked certification include water conservation where water-saving devices installed in all guestrooms and public area water outlets combined with the reduction of water pressure in back-of-the-house areas reduced the amount of water used by the hotel by 10% as well as energy conservation practices that include dimmimg lighting where natural light is sufficient, maximizing use of fresh air if cool air is available to reduce air-conditioning usage, and minimal operation of the chiller and boiler systems, which also helped reduce the hotel’s energy consumption by 10%. Other initiatives taken by Dusit Thani Dubai include using biodegradable cleaning chemicals and solvents, diluting cleaning chemicals before use to minimize unnecessary use and reduce the amount of water needed to wash away the chemicals, usage of charcoal deodorizers and oil-burners using natural products instead of air-fresheners, and recycling materials such as paper, plastic, bottles, cans, and even cooking oil.
The Green Globe program is a worldwide benchmarking certification and performance improvement system assisting the travel and tourism industry to attain sustainability. Using Earthcheck science inside, the Green Globe program addresses major environmental issues including climate change, waste reduction, carbon footprint reduction, and non-renewable resource management.
