Shangri-La Hotel Singapore: The New Tower Wing Unveiled
Though a lowlying tropical island may be far removed from a Himalayan mountain, Shangri-La Hotel Singapore nevertheless delivers a sybaritic hotel experience nearly as mythical as the place for which it is named. The very first property in the Shangri-La group of hotels, Shangri-La Singapore recently reopened its Tower Wing after months of renovation to unveil a typically superb Shangri-La environment complemented by the outstanding service (and signature lobby fragrance) found in every Shangri-La across the world.
The new Tower Wing lobby succeeds in its mission to bring natural elements indoors. An impressive wall of vegetation rises at the far end of the lobby lounge; with a reflecting pool before it and an understated sculpture representing air above, the three elements of earth, water, and air are brought together. The lobby strikes a perfect balance as a large space meant to direct foot traffic in efficient ways while also presenting a fresh face of the hotel and cosy personal areas for private conversation. The classic columns rise high toward the soaring ceiling, yet the feeling is intimate and friendly. Friendly is a byword at Shangri-La, where the impeccably trained staff are as unfailingly congenial as they are professional.
In the guestrooms, the private spaces have been made over to be even more luxurious than before, incorporating contemporary elegance in the best possible taste. Some of the spacious suites even have small kitchenettes so beautifully integrated into the decor they are barely noticeable. Rooms and suites also benefit from Shangri-La‘s unique location in Singapore’s Ladyhill district, one of the greenest and most exclusive residential areas in the country. The expansive views from the 24th-floor Horizon Club lounge are impressive, as is the newly renovated lounge itself where a drinks bar allows guests to mix their own drinks by following recipes in the bar guide provided. The Horizon Club lounge is also the venue for breakfast and other light dining options throughout the day for guests staying in Horizon Club rooms and suites.
One thing that has not changed in the Tower Wing is the excellence of the cuisine served in its restaurants. The Lobby Lounge reiterates the Singapore theme found throughout the hotel with a menu of appetising dishes reflecting the country’s rich culinary heritage. Shangri-La has always been a favourite lunch spot for the corporate set and socialites coming from nearby Orchard Road; the hotel has made itself an even more satisfying dining destination with classic Singaporean dishes on its new-concept lunch menu. Around the corner from the Lobby Lounge dining area is an airy library zone with glass walls bringing in natural light for readers to flip though the pages of the many interesting books lining the shelves.
If reading is not relaxing enough, the spa takes guests to another level of tranquillity. CHI, the Spa, offers a series of Singapore-themed treatments utilising local ingredients to attain maximal wellbeing for its clients. The expertise of the therapists applied in the serene environment of the spa makes for a supremely restorative experience, taking them to a mythical place in the Himalaya in spirit if not in body.
