Expedia, AirAsia launch online venture

As reported yesterday by e-Travel Blackboard, Expedia and AirAsia have launched a joint venture company focusing on the Asia Pacific region that will incorporate two of the airline’s online businesses and Expedia.

The new venture will run AirAsiaGo, GoRooms and Expedia in the Japan, India, Southeast Asia and other East Asian markets.

AirAsia chief executive Dr. Tony Fernandes described the joint venture as a “revolution” in online bookings, particularly at a period where more travellers are using the internet to organise holidays.

“Through this partnership with Expedia we hope to share the same experience we’ve shared with others and take our unique travel and brand experience further, farther and wider,” Dr Fernandes said.

As part of the agreement, Expedia has also has been awarded exclusive third party online distribution of AirAsia and AirAsia X flights and packages in the region.

The partnership offers the online booking site reach into the Asia region which the airline has a strong hold in, Expedia chairman Barry Diller said.

“There is a lot of focus on travel in Asia today and this collaboration allows our customers to connect to a great network here via AirAsia,” Mr Diller said.

“Combined with Expedia’s impressive selection of global travel offerings and package technology, we think this partnership enables both companies to offer travellers world-class travel products at an unparalleled value.”
