One of the world’s leading tourism academics is currently a visiting Professor at my university, University of Technology Sydney. Professor Bob McKercher has been a Professor in Tourism for 20 years at the Hong Kong Polytech, recognised by both PATA and the UN World Tourism Organisation as one of the world’s leading centres of university tourism education.
Prior to joining Hong Kong Polytech Bob lectured at Charles Sturt University in Albury, NSW and had an extensive travel industry career in Canada- where he was born. Bob has developed an extensive portfolio of academic publications including books, chapters and articles. Bob and I share an interest in tourism risk, crisis and recovery management. I first met Bob in early 2005 when we were both involved with the UNWTO’s strategic tourism recovery plan, (developed in Thailand) for all counties affcted by the Dec 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami.
Bob’s great passion is developing and communicating his expertise on the growth and development of China as both a tourism destination and as a tourism generator. Bob is widely recognised as one of the world’s leading experts on China’s tourism industry. He has researched the trends which have changed China from a relatively isolated country into the world’s leading tourism generating country and a country now set to become the world’s most visited destination.
ETB Travel News readers in Asia can readily hear from Bob as he teaches in Hong Kong and frequenty visits China, Japan, Korea the ASEAN countries and North America. Bob has won more awards for his scholarship than many of us have had hot breakfasts. However, one of things I admire about Bob is that he is a great communicator and he is often called upon to speak to travel industry groups. He can communicate complex concepts in a manner which can make sense to real people.
For ETB readers in Sydney, Bob will be giving a free public talk on trends in Chinese tourism at the University of Technology Sydney. The date is Thursday 11 October, the time 2.00 p.m.-4,00 p.m. and the venue is level 8 of the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building, (UTS Building 8) 14-28 Ultimo Rd, Ultimo. ETB readers are cordially invited. The event is sponsored by the UTS Buisness School and refreshments are provided. To RSVP, e mail: firstname.lastname@example.org[caption id=”attachment_311916″ align=”alignnone” width=”300
