LATAM Airlines Group launches ‘Recycle your Journey’
‘Recycle your Journey’ is a global initiative to sustainably manage on-board waste, which will be implemented first for domestic flights in Chile, before being rolled out by other LATAM subsidiaries
Between August and December 2019, the company will recycle more than 20 tonnes of waste from domestic flights in Chile
The ‘Recycle your Journey’ program is part of the ‘Together, More Sustainable’ sustainability strategy of LATAM, considered one of the three most sustainable airline groups in the world
LATAM Airlines Group today unveiled its ‘Recycle your Journey’ program to recycle waste from Mercado LATAM, the company’s buy-on-board food service.
Mercado LATAM packaging on all domestic flights in Chile will be recycled with the segregation of aluminium, glass and plastic. As part of the airline group’s wider sustainability strategy and its commitment to be a leader in on-board recycling, this initiative will be gradually introduced throughout LATAM’s operation in Latin America.
“As one of the three most sustainable airline groups in the world, we are committed to bringing about change and leading by example. Today’s launch of our ‘Recycle your Journey’ program on domestic flights in Chile represents just the first step towards the introduction of on-board recycling across our network.” said Ignacio Cueto, President of LATAM Airlines Group.
Cueto added that one of the most important attributes of ‘Recycle your Journey’ is collaboration: “Without the support and willingness of our passengers and the commitment of our cabin crew, on-board recycling is not possible.”
Between August and December 2019, LATAM projects that it will recycle more than 20 tonnes of waste from domestic flights in Chile. This is the first stage of the company’s on-board recycling program with the goal of recycling 100% of Mercado LATAM packaging in the future. By the end of 2020, the company expects to recycle more than 55 tonnes of on-board waste per year.
Stages of on-board recycling
‘Recycle your Journey’ will be carried out in several stages, staring with the Mercado LATAM service offering passengers the opportunity to buy food and drink on-board. Following the service, the cabin crew will collect the waste from passengers, separating aluminium, glass and plastic. On arrival, LATAM’s partner LSG Sky Chefs will receive the segregated waste to transport it to local recycling centres.
The initiative has been in development for over a year and has involved four trial programs to define and fine-tune processes, including the on-board separation of recyclable waste.
‘Recycle your Journey’ is part of LATAM’s ‘Together, More Sustainable’ sustainability strategy, which has been in development for over ten years and has led to LATAM being ranked as one of the top three airline groups worldwide in the Dow Jones Sustainability Index.
