Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island, Fiji has won the 2011 Sustainable Hotel Award at the Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP), the premier hotel investment conference for the Asia Pacific region.

The award was presented to Ms Patricia Gallardo, Director of Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability of the Shangri-La International Hotel Management Ltd, during the awards ceremony held on 14 October 2011 during HICAP in Hong Kong.

The HICAP Sustainable Hotel Awards were launched in 2007 with the aim of recognizing hotel operators and developers in the Asia Pacific region who demonstrate exemplary sustainable practices and environmentally and culturally responsible development.

On confirmation of the award, Michael Monks, the resort’s general manager, said he was especially delighted that the resort had been recognised internationally for its work in the local community, both through its SANCTUARY program involving working with the local community in the surrounding marine park through the Shangri-La Marine Education Centre located on the island, as well as its EMBRACE program involving working with 4 schools in the local neighbourhood and community.

“It is fantastic recognition of all the work which the Resort and especially the members of our corporate social responsibility (CSR) committee are doing with our various partners in the local community” said Monks. “Our resort has been so much part of the community and we always strive to create an enduring legacy here in our home district of Cuvu.  We are extremely proud to be recognised for this work. Our journey to achieve a sustainable community began a long time ago and has involved many people over the years.  Today, I commend those both past and present for their commitment and passion in giving back to the community and creating the harmony that exists today.”

Shangri-La’s Fijian Resort & Spa, Yanuca Island, Fiji was one of six entries from the Shangri-La group that sent in submissions for this award.
