The Global Tourism Economy Forum (GTEF, “The Forum”) made its debut at the Beijing Launch Ceremony Reception held at AOYA Club on May 28th (Monday), after which a series of promotion initiatives will be unveiled.  This monumental event just confirmed on May 10th that Macao will serve as the host city for its first three editions.  In addition, the event is supported, co-organized and planned by China Chamber of Tourism under the All-China Federation of Industry & Commerce (ACFIC), hosted by the Secretariat for Social Affairs and Culture of the Macao SAR Government and coordinated by Global Tourism Economy Research Centre (GTERC). 

The inaugural edition of the Global Tourism Economy Forum will focus on hot topical issues affecting tourism as well as economic sectors closely knitted with it, such as Information Technology, Lifestyle and Entertainment, Mega Events, etc.  Through exchanges of experience and insight, industry experts, leaders, government officials and scholars on these topics will explore the intricate relationship between tourism and related industries as well as the associated opportunities and challenges.  By discovering and enjoying mutually beneficial partnerships and possibilities, the tourism industry is poised to become a bright spot of economic growth for China and the world at large.

“Global Tourism Economy Forum • Macau 2012” will make its debut on September 9-11th, 2012 at the Macau Tower Convention & Entertainment Centre.  The Forum received wide recognized endorsement from governments and leading tourism organizations, including All-China Federation of Industry and Commerce (ACFIC), Liaison Office of the Central People’s Government in the Macao SAR, Office of the Commissioner of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China in the Macao SAR, National Tourism Administration of the People’s Republic of China (CNTA), United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO), World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) as well as the Macau Government Tourist Office (MGTO).

The choice of Macao hosting the Forum parallels the fact that tourism had been a pillar industry in driving Macau’s socioeconomic development.  As a shining example, Macao achieved remarkable results and growth in its tourism industry and economy over the last decade. In addition, in alignment with China’s 12th Five-Year Plan for National Economic and Social Development, Macao is to be positioned as a World Centre of Tourism and Leisure, in which a clear and concrete development blueprint is established.  A major tourism market in the world, China is currently the world’s second largest travel and tourism economy as well as the world’s third largest tourism destination.; Leveraging upon its unique advantage as the gateway between Mainland China and the world,   Macao is an ideal portal for overseas delegates to understand the China market and for the boundless potential of tourism for China and Macao to be unleashed.

For overseas participants, the Global Tourism Economy Forum is an ideal venue to lay groundwork for possible business alliances between international business leaders and industry practitioners.  The total contribution of Travel & Tourism to China’s GDP is a staggering 9.2%. For Mainland China and Macau to unleash the potential of tourism into being a strong pillar of China’s economic growth, it is crucial to maintain close working relationships, integrate China’s abundant resources and tourism professionals, and draw benefits from innovation of international investors.

Several hundred leaders of the business community and social celebrities gathered together to witness the significant launch for the Forum.  After the ceremony, a number of Chinese and foreign cultural performance were arranged, with guests enjoying the musical talent of DJ ATL and VJ Voltage from renowned Macao Club CUBIC, one of the largest and most prestigious hotspots in Asia. The lively scene highlighted the importance of tourism as a tool in promoting international cultural exchange.
