Diversified portfolio of international clients and events keeps HKCEC on top

Latest figures confirm that the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (“HKCEC”) continues to attract a large number of international exhibition organisers wanting to stage a variety of exhibitions in Hong Kong. Statistics for the HKCEC’s 2011-2012 fiscal year (July 2011 to June 2012) show that 116 of the 1,224 events held at the prime harbourfront venue during the period were exhibitions, and that they were organised by a total of 52 different organisers. Of these, 28 were from outside Hong Kong: 17 were international companies with local representative offices, 10 were overseas organisers, and one was from Mainland China.

103 of the 116 exhibitions held in the FY2011/12 were recurrent events. Organisers consistently enjoy healthy growth over time at the HKCEC.  In FY2011/12, for example, 35 of the recurrent exhibitions recorded double-digit growth in terms of gross exhibition space compared with their previous editions. New organisers and exhibitions are another important indicator that the HKCEC continues to be an attractive option for international organisers. Nine of the year’s 116 exhibitions were first time events at the HKCEC, all new ventures by different organisers.  Furthermore, of these nine organisers, eight were new to the HKCEC.

Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre (Management) Ltd (“HML”) is the professional private management company responsible for the venue management and daily operation of the HKCEC. Managing Director of HML, Ms Monica Lee-Müller, remarked, “We take pride in attracting event organisers from around the world to Hong Kong.  Their presence reaffirms that HML’s level of service delivery matches the highest international standards. The diversity of our event and client portfolio underscores the HKCEC’s position as a preferred venue for event organisers, and Hong Kong’s position as the Trade Fair Capital of Asia.”

Commenting on what attracts new exhibition organisers and brings others back to the HKCEC year after year, Ms Lee-Müller said, “Of the event organisers who responded to our event e-questionnaire, 99% rated the service they received ‘Satisfactory’ or better. This is a gratifying achievement given the vast range of events held at the HKCEC.  The challenge of servicing so many different organisers with such a wide range of different needs raises our team’s quality of service and motivates us to set the bar even higher. “

Other than exhibitions, the HKCEC was also home to conferences, corporate meetings, banquets and entertainment events.  In total, 1,224 events held at the HKCEC in FY2011/12 attracted over 5.6 million visitors to the venue. “Over its 24 years of operation, the HML team has hosted 40,830 events and has served over 75 million buyers, exhibitors, visitors and guests,” noted Ms Lee-Müller. “These events have contributed significant economic benefits to Hong Kong by generating spin-offs for related industries, creating numerous jobs and business opportunities for small and medium enterprises, and enhancing Hong Kong’s international image and reputation.”
